How to bulk update Shopify items via csv file upload

Shopify App - Bulk update items via csv file upload

Once the products have been added to your store the only thing that will continue to be updated is the stock quantity. Therefore from time to time you may need to update the products in bulk. This can include:
  1. Cost price changes.
  2. Sale price changes.
  3. Status updates eg. if products are discontinued change to "archived".
  4. Add tags to help organise the products.
  5. Change the name or description of items.
Follow the steps below to bulk update your products.

1. Export your products. Navigate to Shopify > Products > Export.  Click to export your products.

2. In the dialog box select "All products" then "Export Products"

3. Open the file in a spreadsheet application like Microsoft Excel.

4. Remove all rows and columns that are not required using the sort or filter functions.

Rows
Each image has a separate row. The only row required for the import contains the SKU. All other rows can be deleted.

Columns
The only mandatory columns required for the import are:
  1. Handle
  2. Title
  3. Variant SKU
All other columns can be deleted. Include other columns that you wish to edit the data of like Tags, Status, Cost per item or Variant Price (your sale price). If you are not updating all products the use a VLOOKUP function to filter the required items.

5. Populate the sheet with the new data that is required for the update. For example if you are removing discontinued items the sheet would look like this:

If updating sale prices:

6. Once complete save the sheet as CSV format.

7. Navigate to Shopify > Products > Import.  Click to Import your products.

8. Select your saved CSV file.

9. Tick the box "Overwrite products with matching handles." This must be selected or the products will not be updated.

10. Click "Upload and preview" and check the data looks correct then click "Import products".

11. The products will then begin importing. The more products that are on the sheet the longer it will take. For example 2,000 products will take 2-3 hours.

12. Shopify will send an email summary when the import is complete and detail any failures.
